In some cases, blank pages are added to books during production to meet printing requirements.
Books are printed on large sheets of paper using commercial printing presses. These sheets are then folded and trimmed to create groups of pages called signatures. Because of how these sheets are arranged on the press, the total page count of a book must fit specific multiples depending on the trim size.
- Books 6" × 9" and smaller must have a page count that is a multiple of 6.
- Books larger than 6" × 9" up to 8.5" × 11" must have a page count that is a multiple of 4.
If the final manuscript page count does not meet these requirements, blank pages are added at the end of the book to reach the necessary multiple. This ensures the book can be printed, folded, and bound correctly on the press.
These blank pages are a normal part of commercial printing and do not affect the content or quality of the book.
